Alpaca Fleece:

The Demand

Alpaca fleece is highly prized for it's very soft feel (handle), it's high thermal properties, it's durability and it's variety of natural colours. The 'saddle'or blanket has the largest area and is the prime fleece from the animal. There is also the 'neck' which is often shorter in length than the saddle, followed by the belly, apron & legs which are coarser and commonly known as the 'pieces'.

The Market

Alpaca fleece can be processed into high quality fashion garments such as suits, jackets, skirts and coats. Jumpers and other garmets made from the fleece are soft, light and warm. Because of it's natural warmth it is also used as a continental quilt filling. Coarse fibre can be used to make car seat covers and carpets. The international market for alpaca product is enormous with demand exceeding supply.

Availability

At Otway Orchard Alpacas we concentrate on improving our coloured herd which is popular amongst the home spinners and felters. We have a constant supply of fleece on hand for sale which can be viewed on our 'Alpaca Products' page and we also make our own alpaca products. The Alpaca fleece used in these products has been hand worked to let the natural beauty of the fleece and its colour variations shine through.

AAFL
